Why You Need a Board-Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA)

If you are looking for elder law, estate planning and probate related matters, not all attorneys are created equal. When it comes to counseling and representing families in crisis, mature persons and persons with special needs or their representatives, according to AARP, elder law attorneys that are board certified by the National Elder Law Foundation (CELAs) are the “gold standard of expertise.”

Certification provides the public, as well as other attorneys and professionals, with certified experts who have the enhanced knowledge, skills, experience, and ethics to be properly identified as certified elder law attorneys.

The only organization that certifies attorneys specializing in elder and special needs law throughout the United stets is the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF.) The certification process is rigorous and there are currently only 29 CELAs in Massachusetts. Before being certified, an applicant must have practiced for at least five years with a focus of at least half their matters in elder and special needs law; demonstrated at least a minimum number of individual cases in numerous distinct categories comprising elder and special needs law; passed a full day-long written examination (recent pass rates have been below 35%). In addition, the attorneys must undergo a successful review by peers and colleagues focused on their intellect and ethics in representing elder and special needs clients.
